Qualifications

  • Certificate in Financial Planning

    A recognition offered by the Chartered Insurance Institute in the United Kingdom. Individuals who hold this qualification have satisfied coursework and testing requirements set by the organisation.

    The life and pensions route builds knowledge and understanding of the sector’s role and its activities. It considers important customer needs, solutions and products, and how individuals and organisations work within the regulatory and legislative environment.

  • MAQ Mortgage Advice Qualification

    This qualification assesses the knowledge and understanding of the UK regulation environment in the financial services industry together with types of mortgage products and repayment options and the giving of mortgage advice.

  • FP1 Financial Services and their Regulation

    Assesses an understanding of the financial services industry, including regulation and legislation.

  • FP2 Protection, Savings, and Investment

    Assesses an understanding of protection, savings and investment products.

  • FP3 Identifying and Satisfying Client Needs

    Assesses an understanding of conducting a fact-find, assessing the client’s needs, and recommending specific (appropriate) financial products to meet those needs

James at
work

James started as a financial adviser with the Co-operative Insurance Society in February 2002, gaining his qualifications at the same time.

From 2004 to 2012, he worked as a self-employed financial adviser, before moving to Dubai as a financial adviser for a couple of years.

In 2014, James became a self-employed mortgage and protection adviser in Edinburgh at Cailean Limited.

Bespoke Home Finance, James’s own business, began in 2020. Today, James focuses on mortgages and protection.

James’s clients live throughout the country and come from all walks of life. Many are NHS doctors and nurses, who often refer friends and family to Bespoke Home Finance.

James outside
of work

James has been married to his wife, Fiona, since 1994. The couple have four children and two Labrador Retrievers called Luna and Lottie.

In his spare time, James enjoys walking in the countryside and on the beach with Fiona and the dogs.

He also likes watching Stranraer FC – or at least sometimes he does… James has a season ticket for the club, and was previously a committee member.

Few people know that despite being a proud Scotsman, James was born in England. Other little-known facts about James are that he’s left-handed, and is also ex-Forces, having served in the RAF.

The proudest moment of my career was:

Setting up Bespoke Home Finance during lockdown.

On an ideal weekend, you can find me:

Walking the dogs, watching football, and having a lovely Sunday dinner cooked by me.

The three things I love most about my job are:

Helping people, talking to people from many different parts of the country, and providing solutions to problems.

My favourite holiday destination is:

Dubai, or Lanzarote, depending on budget.

The types of people I most enjoy working with are:

Those who trust my knowledge and experience, and let me get on with my job. They’re much better than people who listen too much to their mate in the pub!

My favourite song to play in the car is:

‘Monkey Man’ by The Specials.

The first album I bought was:

Elvis’s Greatest Hits.

If I could be any fictional character, I would be:

Jack Bauer.

If I could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, I would win a medal in:

Snoring, apparently…

When the dessert menu arrives, I’m looking for:

Sticky toffee pudding.

The three qualities that draw me to new people are:

Open, happy, and smiling.

My pet peeve is:

Dog fouling on pavements.

The best gift I’ve ever received is:

My children.

The three people at my dream dinner party would be:

Peter Kay, Billy Connolly, and David Jason.

The three small things that make my day better are:

My family, no rain, and a nice bottle of red wine.

Three things I haven’t done so far include:

Ran a marathon, been to America, and enjoyed eating liver!
